Solid Waste Division announces yard waste disposal changes
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Effective this week, Columbia residents are no
longer required to use the city’s clear yard waste bags to dispose of
yard waste. Leaves, grass, twigs and small branches can now be placed in
any bag, box or other disposal container, and set out with the trash on
your regular trash day.
This change stems from the addition of the new bioreactor at the
city’s landfill. Columbia is the first city in Missouri to utilize
bioreactor technology. Through the use of a bioreactor, the city will
inject liquids into the waste to accelerate the bio-stabilization and
produce methane at a higher rate for use as a renewable energy source.
Other than discontinuing the use of clear bags, requirements for
disposal of yard waste remain the same. Bags or boxes should not exceed
50 pounds. Limbs must be bundled and tied, and should not exceed 4 feet
in length, 2 feet in diameter and 50 pounds per bundle. You can still
use clear bags to dispose of yard waste or trash, but these bags will no
longer be available for sale in local retail stores or distributed by
the city.
Blue bags are used for recycling containers such as food cans,
glass jars and bottles, aluminum, and #1 and #2 plastic items.
Leaves and grass can also be taken to the city’s mulch sites
at Capen Park or Parkside Drive, and the city’s compost facility. The
compost facility accepts commercial and residential yard waste for a
fee. It is located at 5700 Peabody Road, near the city’s landfill off
Route B / Paris Road; the hours are 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday, and
8 a.m - 4 p.m. on Saturday. For more information about the city’s
compost facility, go online to www.GoColumbiaMo.com (search
GoComposting).
