Rain forces road closures in Boone County; motorists advised to
exercise caution

COLUMBIA, MO (April 30, 2009) - The Columbia/Boone County Office of
Emergency Management (OEM) reports over 20 low-water crossings have been
closed in the county due to water over the road. More closures are
possible as the day progresses, and motorists are asked to avoid the
areas where water covers the road.

“This is a very dangerous situation for motorists, as well as those
who live in areas affected by the rising water,” says OEM Director
James McNabb. “We want motorists to use common sense and avoid
water-covered roads. Even just a small amount of water over a crossing
can contain enough force to sweep away a vehicle, so we recommend
drivers find alternate routes to get to their destination. Those living
near these swollen creeks and streams are also warned to watch for
rapidly rising water and take the necessary precautions to protect life
and property.“

A flood warning is in effect for Boone County until 11:30 this morning.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting more rain to fall
through the next several days, which could add to the flooding
problems.

On average, more people are killed by flooding than by tornadoes,
lightning and hurricanes. Most of these deaths occur at night, when it
is more difficult to recognize the dangers, and when people are trapped
in vehicles. Motorists are reminded to steer clear of low-water
crossings which are covered in water.

Note to Media: The Office of Emergency Management maintains an updated
list of road closures on our Web site. Feel free to pass the link on to
your audience. You can find that list at
