Mayor declares this week ‘Stop on Red Week’ in Columbia
COLUMBIA, MO (August 3, 2009) - Mayor Darwin Hindman has issued a
proclamation recognizing the week of Aug. 2-8 as “Stop on Red Week”
in Columbia. The proclamation is part of a national observance of
“Stop on Red Week,” an effort to raise awareness of problems
associated with drivers who run red lights, the accidents caused by red
light running and the related injuries and fatalities.
“This is a problem that is not only prevalent, but very dangerous,”
Hindman said. “In Columbia, police issued more than 300 tickets in
2008 to drivers who ran red lights. Running red lights is not only
against the law, it places others in danger.”
The city of Columbia is poised to activate two photo red-light cameras
beginning this week. The cameras will be activated in the northbound
lanes at the intersection of Providence Road at Broadway and Stadium
Boulevard at Worley Street. A warning period will commence for 30 days
before tickets are officially issued. Violators could face fines of $120
for running a red light at those intersections. Additional cameras will
be installed in the future as the need is determined.
