Boards and commissions applications are available 
									
	(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th floor, by noon on Friday,
Sept. 4. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the
city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The
following are current boards and commissions openings:  
●	The Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire July 31, 2012. The member must have knowledge of street
construction and maintenance and must be a qualified voter of the city.
The board advises the Council on issues relating to sidewalks, walkways
and trails. Monthly meetings are held the third Wednesday at 7 p.m.
●	The Board of Health has one vacancy with the term to expire Aug.
31, 2010.  The member must have an interest in public health. The board
acts in an advisory capacity to the Council on matters pertaining to
public health and animal control. Monthly meetings are held the second
Thursday at 5:30 p.m.  
●	The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term
to expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in
the HVACR business and a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is
empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are
held the second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. 
●	The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence of the regular member) with
terms expiring Aug. 1, 2010, for the following categories: professional
engineer with experience in electrical/mechanical engineering and a
master plumber. The commission periodically reviews and makes
recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly
meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
●	The Citizens Police Review Board has eight vacancies with terms
to expire two, three or four years after appointment. Members must be
residents of Columbia and registered voters. Members cannot be employed
by the city, be a party to any pending litigation against the city, be
an elected public office holder or be a candidate for elected public
office. Members should reflect the cultural and racial diversity of
Columbia and have no serious criminal record. A criminal history of all
applicants of this board will be conducted and the City Council will be
advised of any convictions for violations of federal, state or local
law. The board reviews appeals from the police chief's decisions on
alleged police misconduct, hosts public meetings and educational
programs for residents and police officers and reviews and makes
recommendations on police policies, procedures and training. Meetings
are held on call.
●	The Community Development Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire Nov. 1, 2011. The member must be a resident from Ward 5
and a qualified voter of the city. Members shall not serve on the board
of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding
through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of
the commission. The commission acts in an advisory capacity in all
matters pertaining to community development. Monthly meetings are held
on call.
●	The Comprehensive Plan Task Force has 15 vacancies.
Consideration will be given to prior involvement in the visioning
process, service on a city commission, professional credentials or
participation in a civic, business or professional organization for all
other vacancies. At least one member shall be a member of the Columbia
Vision Commission. The Task Force advises and assists the Planning and
Zoning Commission and City Council on all phases of the Comprehensive
Plan development, including citizen involvement, public education and
outreach, recruitment of volunteers and review of interim products.
Meetings are held on call. 
●	The Convention and Visitors Advisory Board has five vacancies
with terms to expire Sept. 30, 2011. Two members must be owners or
operators of a hotel or motel within the city limits, and all must have
demonstrated, by past activities, an interest in the convention and
tourism business. The board shall advise the city on the use of the
funds created by the hotel and motel tax. Monthly meetings are held the
last Monday at 12 p.m. 
●	The Cultural Affairs Commission has one vacancy with the term to
expire Oct. 31, 2010. The member must be involved in elementary or
secondary education, shall not be a resident of Ward 1 and shall not
serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which
applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding
upon recommendation of the commission. The commission advises the
Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment
of the city. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 4:15 p.m.
●	The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has three vacancies with
terms to expire Oct. 15, 2012. Members assess the user-friendliness and
effectiveness of the city’s Internet activities. The group makes
recommendations to staff and Council on resource priority for the
city’s effective utilization of the Internet. Meetings are held
every other month on the third Wednesday at 5 p.m.
●	The New Century Fund Board has three vacancies with terms to
expire Sept. 30, 2012. Members must have an interest in the future of
the city of Columbia and the funding needs required to achieve future
success. All must be current residents and qualified electors of the
city of Columbia. The New Century Fund Inc. is a Missouri not-for-profit
corporation. Meetings are held on call.
●	The Personnel Advisory Board has two vacancies with terms to
expire Sept. 30, 2012. Members shall have significant, substantive
knowledge of social, legislative, political, and administrative factors
affecting personnel management and employee relations. Members must also
be residents and registered qualified voters of the city. In addition,
members must not hold a lucrative position in city government nor any
other lucrative public office during their terms. The board advises the
Council on its findings, opinions, various conclusions and
recommendations on the status of the personnel system. Meetings are held
on call.  
●	The Public Communications Resource Advisory Committee has one
vacancy with the term to expire Dec. 31, 2010. The member must be a
qualified voter and resident of Ward 1 and shall be experienced in the
field of communications, citizenship or management of not-for-profit
organizations, and shall not be paid officers or employees of the city,
nor serve on the board of directors or be employed by any entity that
applies for funding through the committee or which receives funding upon
recommendation of the committee.  The committee advises the City Council
in allocating designated revenue to entities that provide public
communication services to Columbia citizens.  Meetings are held the
fourth Thursday of the month at 4 p.m.
