Energy Choices students learn the science of energy

(Columbia, MO) - Columbia Water & Light staff members will teach
7th graders the concepts of electricity and energy efficiency over the
next several weeks. The Energy Choices program gives the utility a way
of teaching Columbia’s science students how electricity is produced
and the importance of using it wisely.
The introductory session of Energy Choices provides an overview
of how energy is created and what sources are available to create
energy. Both traditional and renewable resources are covered. To gain
perspective on the process of creating energy, the students are given a
chance to create electricity by pedaling a bike. The next week, Columbia
Water & Light staff returns to the classrooms to assist students in a
personal energy efficiency project. Students collect temperature and
water flow data from their own showers. They are then shown how to
calculate both the energy use and cost of showering.
