Boone County faces its first brush with snow; residents advised to make
sure they’re ready
COLUMBIA, MO (December 7, 2009) - While the latest weather forecasts
indicate that the brunt of wintry precipitation may miss Columbia and
Boone County, the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management
(OEM) encourages residents to make sure they are ready for a more
significant winter weather event.
“It looks like the Columbia and Boone County area will be spared the
worst of the snow in the next few days,” says OEM Director Zim
Schwartze. “However, this brush with winter should serve as a reminder
to all of us to be ready for the inevitability of snow, ice and bitterly
cold temperatures. At home or in your vehicle, we all need to be
prepared in case the weather dominates our surroundings.
Schwartze recommends that residents make sure their homes are well
stocked with the essentials, such as food, water and medicine. Supplies
should be sufficient to last several days without electricity or running
water. Those traveling during winter weather are encouraged to keep an
emergency supply kit, consisting of a flashlight, windshield scraper,
paper towels, extra clothes, matches and candles, booster cables,
compass, maps, sand, chains, blankets, and high calorie non-perishable
food in their vehicle.
Whenever winter weather hits, those planning trips can learn the latest
road conditions throughout the state by calling the State Highway
Patrol’s Road Condition Hotline (1-800-222-6400), or access the State
Transportation Department’s Web site (www.modot.mo.gov). For
information on winter weather preparedness, log on to the OEM page of
the city's Web site at www.gocolumbiamo.com/EM.
