Columbians start new year right at 'Happy New U' event
(Columbia, MO) - The Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health
is hosting Columbia’s second annual "Happy New U" fitness event on New
Year’s Day, Friday, Jan. 1. Held at Columbia’s Activity and
Recreation Center (ARC) from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., this free community event
will have Columbia’s fitness experts conducting mini-workouts and
demonstrations to show the variety of exercise options that are
available in our city.
"Our goal with this event," says Tery Donelson, the chairman of the
Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health, "is to help Columbians
get a jump start on New Year’s resolutions, get moving and to stay
moving longer by connecting them with local fitness options and
professionals that will be the best match for them."
Classes or demonstrations offered at the event for adults will include
tai chi, Pilates, yoga, Jazzercise, Zumba, body combat, fencing, soccer,
spinning, belly dancing and more. Children will be able to participate
in many of the fitness activities. The activities will be held from
10:10 a.m. to 10:55 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. to 1 p.m. Participants can
register for the activities at the ARC beginning at 9:45 a.m. on Jan. 1 …
all activities are free. Participants should come dressed "ready to
move!"
Fitness experts from the ARC, Columbia Jazzercise Center, Elm Street
Yoga, Wilson’s Gym, Pilates of Columbia, MAC Soccer and others will be
conducting classes and demonstrations.
The highlight of the "Happy New U" event will be one for the city’s
record books! Promising lots of sweat, laughter, holiday calories burned
and photo opportunities, Columbians attending will participate with
Mayor Hindman in "Columbia’s Largest Group Workout" at 11 a.m.
Attendees are encouraged to bring cans of food to use as weights during
the workout. Canned food items will be donated to the Central Missouri
Food Bank.
Mayor Darwin Hindman thinks this is a great way to start off 2010 on
the right foot, "I hope to be there and be part of it. Columbians who
attend will have just as much fun burning off the holiday calories as
they did putting them on."
