Fire interrupts lunch at Shakespeare's Pizza

COLUMBIA, MO (February 19, 2009) - Columbia firefighters were called at
10:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, to 3304 Broadway Business Park Court,
Shakespeare's Pizza, for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters found heavy smoke in the rear of the restaurant. Using
thermal imaging cameras, fire crews located the fire in a rear
mechanical room, inside a large commercial clothes dryer. The automatic
fire sprinkler system activated and contained the fire to the dryer
appliance. Fire crews extinguished the fire inside the dryer and removed
a large load of charred towels to the exterior, where they completed
fire extinguishment. Additional fire crews used large electric fans to
remove smoke and heat from the restaurant. Direct fire damage was
contained to the dryer, with minor smoke and water damage throughout the
kitchen area. There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $5,000.

Fire crews also assisted in removing excess water from the sprinkler
system activation and fire suppression activities to minimize peripheral
water damage to the business.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and at
this time the fire remains under investigation. Representatives of the
Columbia/Boone County Health Department were also working at the scene
to ensure the safe handling of food product inside the restaurant, which
is standard procedure for any fire occurring in a restaurant.

According to Mr. Kurt Mirtsching, the restaurant is currently closed,
and will remain closed until this evening or Friday morning as a result
of the fire.
