Animal Control offices at new location

COLUMBIA, MO (February 24, 2009) - Beginning today, Columbia/Boone
County’s animal control officers will be housed at the Columbia/Boone
County Department of Public Health and Human Services facility located
at 1005 West Worley in Columbia. This is the first time since Animal
Control’s inception in the early 1960s that the offices are physically
located within the health department. Animal control officers previously
operated out of the Central Missouri Humane Society office located on
Big Bear Boulevard. The move was a result of ongoing negotiations
between the health department and the humane society.

Aside from a new location, it’s business as usual for animal control
officers and citizens. Pet owners who wish to pick up their pet must
call Animal Control at (573) 449-1888 to set up an appointment with an
animal control officer. Officers will meet pet owners at the humane
society on Big Bear Boulevard, where the pet will be returned to the
owner. No animals will be housed at the health department facility on
West Worley.

Animal control falls under the Environmental Health Division of the
health department and currently operates with six officers. On average,
animal control officers respond to over 3,100 animal-related complaints
each year in the city of Columbia.
