FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 26, 2009

City of Columbia, Voluntary Action Center, Downtown Optimist Club to
distribute computers

(Columbia, MO) -- This Saturday, 35 of the city’s used
computers will find new homes in worthy Columbia households. The city of
Columbia, the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) and the Downtown Optimist
Club are partnering once again to provide surplus (used) computers and
equipment to eligible VAC clients as part of the “Homes For
Computers” Program. Thirty-five computers will be given away to
clients who are enrolled in VAC programs or programs/services
administered by the VAC and who were found eligible for the computer
giveaway. In addition, Boone County Sheriff Andy Anderson will present a
short program on Internet safety for all computer recipients.
Those clients who have applied and been found eligible have been
contacted by the VAC and will receive their computer this Saturday. The
computers will be distributed to the winning clients by the Downtown
Optimist Club on Saturday, Feb. 28, between the 9 a.m. -12 p.m. at the
Downtown Optimist Club Building, 1201 Grand Ave.
The Homes for Computers Program was approved by City Council in
December 2003. The establishment of this program allows the city to
invest in its most valuable resource, our children. This year’s
program will bring the number of donated computers to 223.
Questions should be directed to Cindy Mustard, executive
director, Voluntary Action Center, at (573) 449-6959.
