City seeks public comment on police chief finalists

COLUMBIA, MO (January 16, 2009) - Citizens interested in the city of
Columbia’s police chief search process may register comments regarding
the four candidates until noon on Wednesday, Jan. 21.

The four finalists include Police Chief Kenneth M. Burton, Haltom City,
Texas; Police Major Catherine L. Laughlin, Kansas City, Mo.; Police
Chief Wayne I. McCoy, Blue Springs, Mo.; and Todd A. Miller, most
recently police chief at Terrell, Texas. 

“If you observed these individuals during our televised news
conference or met them at the informal roundtable session earlier this
week, we welcome your reactions. If you didn’t meet them but have
thoughts about what makes a good fit for this community, let us know,”
said City Manager Bill Watkins.

Three options are available:
● Register an online comment using a link on the city’s home page
at www.GoColumbiaMo.com. Click on “Police Chief finalist public
comment;”
● Send an email message to the city manager at
cityman at GoColumbiaMo.com; or
● Send a note to City Manager Bill Watkins at PO Box P.O. Box 6015,
Columbia, MO 65205-6015.

Watkins said he is conducting additional background checks to narrow
the current list from four finalists to two. 

“We’re doing everything possible to make this a creditable search.
I want to thank the citizen advisory committee and the members of the
public who have participated, so far.”
