Origin and cause of Saturday's mobile home fire

COLUMBIA, MO (January 26, 2009) - Columbia Fire Department
investigators have determined the fire at Lot 57, (a corrected lot
number) which occurred on Saturday, Jan. 24, was caused by an electrical
failure in the area underneath the water heater.

Fire investigators found that the likely cause was a malfunction of the
heat tape or the extension cord supplying power to the heat tape, which
was protecting pipes near the water heater from freezing.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds those who may need to use heat
tape to protect water pipes to install the heat tape per manufactures
instructions, use the proper size wiring to supply power to the heat
tape, and to inspect the installation of the heat tape on a regular
basis per the manufacturer's instructions.
