Groundbreaking for new city parking garage

COLUMBIA, MO (July 10, 2009) - The City of Columbia invites the public
to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new
parking garage at Fifth and Walnut. The ceremony will be held on
Tuesday, July 21 at 4:00 p.m. at the corner of Sixth and Walnut, east
side of the parking lot.

The parking lot directly south of the Post Office facility will be
fenced off effective Monday, July 20 and will not be available for
public use until the garage is complete. Citizens are encouraged to use
the hourly parking spaces in the Sixth and Cherry Parking Garage or
on-street meters, or purchase covered or uncovered permits for the Sixth
and Cherry Garage until the project is completed. The garage is expected
to be complete by the fall of 2010. The new garage will alleviate
parking problems north of Broadway that have occurred due to expansion
of the Boone County Courthouse and City Hall, as well as a shortage of
parking spaces for the Post Office facility and surrounding businesses.

Construction of the multi-level garage will include 703 total parking
spaces with approximately 13,000 SF of mixed use space at the grade
level along the north side (Walnut Street). Approximately 48 parking
spaces will be below grade for utilization by the Police Department. The
garage will be a cast-in-place, unbonded post-tensioned structural
system, which was designed by Walker Parking Consultants. Project cost
is estimated at $14 million, which would be funded by Special Obligation
Revenue Improvement Bonds. These bonds would be repaid through parking
revenues.

If you have any questions about the project, please contact the Public
Works Department at 573-874-7250.
