Summer Weather Safety Week is June 21-27

COLUMBIA, MO (June 22, 2009) - With summer set to begin next week, the
Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the
Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services
remind residents to be aware of the many dangers posed by summer
weather. The week of June 21-27 is observed as “Summer Weather Safety
Week” in Missouri.

“Summer brings a good deal of weather-related hazards to the area,”
said Interim OEM Director Zim Schwartze. “Residents must be prepared
for the danger of thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and heat on any
given day. The most important precaution anyone can take is to be aware
of weather forecasts, and prepare accordingly. If severe weather is
expected, keep updated on rapidly changing weather conditions. If the
danger is excessive heat and humidity, wear the proper clothing and keep
hydrated. Simple precautionary steps can mean the difference between
life and death during the summer.”

For more information on how to prepare for dangers posed by severe
thunderstorms and lightning, log on to the Office of Emergency
Management’s Web site, www.GoColumbiaMo.com/EM/. For information
concerning heat-related illnesses, refer to the Columbia/Boone County
Department of Public Health and Human Services Web site,
