Worker suffers minor electrical burns during mishap

COLUMBIA, MO (March 4, 2009) - Columbia firefighters were called at
1:13 p.m. to 705 East Walnut Street, the Boone County Courthouse, for a
report of a medical emergency.

Fire crews found a male patient who had suffered minor burns to his
face, neck and arms from an "arc flash" while servicing an electrical
box providing power to area streetlights. The worker was employed by PAR
Electrical Contractor and working as part of a contract with city of
Columbia Water and Light. During the course of the work, a malfunction
occurred inside the electrical box, which caused the "arc flash" and
injuries. The worker was transported to University Hospital with minor
injuries.

There was no interruption of power to the courthouse or other buildings
in the downtown area. The circuit involved serviced the streetlights
only.
