Firefighters respond to fire at MU Engineering building

COLUMBIA, MO (March 11, 2009) - Fire units from the Columbia Fire
Department responded to 416 Sixth Street for a commercial structure fire
at the MU Engineering building. It was reported that workers on the roof
saw fire and smoke from a 10 x 20 foot area under the surface of the
roof of new construction to the existing building.

When fire crews arrived they began searching the third floor for fire
and eventually upgraded the call to a second alarm for more personnel in
the search efforts. Shortly after the second alarm firefighters ascended
to the roof where they found workers who had just knocked down the fire
using extinguishers. The second alarm assignment (two additional fire
units) was returned to service before they arrived at the scene.
Firefighters continued extinguishing efforts by removing parts of the
newly constructed roof to check for spot fires in the insulation and
other building materials.

Although the fire remains under investigation, workers stated that they
were using a cutting torch on the roof at the time of the incident. A
damage estimate is not available at this time. There were no injuries
during this incident.
