Boards and commissions applications are available
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th floor, by noon on Friday,
April 3. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the
city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The
following are current boards and commissions openings:
● The Airport Advisory Board has two vacancies with terms to
expire May 16, 2013. Members must be registered voters of the city and
be familiar with the subject of aviation. The board makes
recommendations to the Council for the development and use of the
airport. Monthly meetings held on the first Wednesday following the
first Monday of the month at 12 p.m. at the airport.
● The Board of Adjustment has one vacancy with term to expire May
1, 2014. The member must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The
board is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where it is
alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or
determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of
zoning, planning and subdividing ordinances. Monthly meetings are held
the second Tuesday at 7 p.m.
● The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence regular members) for each of
the following categories: professional engineer with experience in
electrical/mechanical engineering (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010) and a
master plumber (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010). The commission
periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building
construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30
p.m.
● The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term
to expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in
the HVACR business and a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is
empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are
held the second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m.
● The Columbia Vision Commission has two vacancies with terms to
expire Dec. 15, 2013. One must be a qualified voter residing within the
city of Columbia and one must be a resident of Boone County, not
residing within the city limits of Columbia. Members must have
demonstrated a commitment to the visioning process. Candidates will be
evaluated on the ability to work with data and understand systematic
relationships, the ability to work collaboratively, management skills,
independence, existing memberships or positions and contributions to the
diversity of the commission. The commission tracks, monitors and assists
with the implementation of the visioning process. Meetings are held the
fourth Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m.
● The Downtown Columbia Leadership Council has one vacancy with
the term to expire May 1, 2012. Members shall develop and recommend to
the Council proposed boundaries of an expanded downtown development area
and develop a strategic and underlying concept plan for that area.
Members may also work on other projects as requested by Council.
Meetings are held the fourth Monday of the month at 4 p.m.
● The Planning and Zoning Commission has two vacancies with terms
to expire May 31, 2014. Members must be qualified voters and residents
of the city for at least one year immediately prior to appointment, and
shall hold no other office or position in city government. The
commission makes recommendations pertaining to planning and zoning
related issues. Meetings are held the Thursday following council meeting
Mondays at 7 p.m.
● The Public Communications Resource Advisory Committee has one
vacancy with the term to expire Dec. 31, 2010. The member must be a
qualified voter and resident of Ward 1. Members shall be experienced in
the field of communications, citizenship or management of not-for-profit
organizations and
shall not be paid officers or employees of the city, nor serve on the
board of directors or be employed by any entity that applies for funding
through the committee or which receives funding upon recommendation of
the committee. The committee advises the City Council in allocating
designated revenue to entities that provide public communication
services to Columbia citizens. Meetings are held on call.
● The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire Oct. 31, 2009. Members shall have demonstrated interest
in and concern for substance and alcohol abuse problems in the
community. The commission promotes coordination of programs intended to
prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse. Monthly meetings held
on the second Wednesday of the month at 12 p.m.
● The University of Missouri Extension Council of Boone County has
one vacancy with the term to expire March 1, 2011. The member must be a
resident of the city. The Council makes recommendations to the
university in regard to the extension program and administers Boone
County’s share of the cost of the extension services in the area.
Monthly meetings are held the fourth Thursday at 7 p.m.
