Groundbreaking to kick off Scott Boulevard expansion

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia invites the public to a
groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of Scott Boulevard. The
ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 22, at the Daniel Boone
Little League Field on Scott Boulevard, near Chapel Hill Road.
This ceremony kicks off the beginning of street improvements to
Scott Boulevard. The project will consist of widening the street to four
lanes plus a center median from Rollins Road to Brookview Terrace, which
is approximately 10,000 feet in length. The project also includes
utility line relocation, bicycle lanes, new sidewalks on both sides of
the road and a pedestrian underpass just north of Chapel Hill Road. The
total cost for this project is $16.1 million, which was identified as a
2005 ballot issue project.
Work will progress in stages and traffic will be shifted on
temporary lanes during various phases until completed by summer/fall
2010, weather dependent. The contractor will attempt to keep traffic
disruption to a minimum.
Once completed, the expansion of Scott Boulevard will
significantly help with vehicular and pedestrian traffic to offer better
connectivity in west Columbia and alleviate traffic congestion. This
Phase 1 work will be followed by two more phases as funding permits, the
planned improvements ultimately extend south to Route KK.
