Public invited to 15th anniversary reception for USS Columbia crew
members Friday
(COLUMBIA, MO) -- Three crew members from Columbia’s namesake
submarine, USS Columbia, will participate in Memorial Day weekend
activities. The public is invited to an informal “self host”
reception at 5 p.m., and a 5:30 p.m. ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, May
22, at Boone Tavern and Restaurant, 811 E. Walnut.
Visiting crew members include the following:
SUPPO/CHOP - Ensign Jamie Steffensmeier
Sonar Chief - STSC Keith Richter
Sailor of the Year - Petty Officer Jamison Zrust
This year’s visit marks the 15th anniversary of Columbia’s
namesake partnership with the USS Columbia. The crew will attend the
Honored Guests and Volunteers Banquet Saturday night; attend the air
show on Sunday; ride in the Memorial Day parade as guests of the Muddy
MO Chapter of the World War II Submarine Veteran’s Association; and
participate in the wreath laying ceremony at the Boone County Courthouse
on Monday immediately following the parade.
Family members of Petty Officer Zrust will drive in from
Minnesota to visit their son and participate in several of the
activities planned for the crew.
The visiting crew will also be hosted by member of two Columbia
families that have sons serving on the USS Columbia.
The visit is sponsored by the Columbia Submarine Committee,
which is chaired by Anne Moore, D&M Sound. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary, VFW
Post 280 and United States Submarine Veterans Inc. provide financial
resources to defray costs.
The USS Columbia was christened in September 1994. It has
namesake cities in Missouri, Illinois and South Carolina. Crew from the
USS Columbia have participated in Memorial Day weekend events every year
but one since 1994. Columbia, Missouri, and the USS Columbia program is
one of the Navy’s longest, continuously active namesake city
relationships.
