Volunteer appreciation event will be held Thursday
First Howard B. Lang Jr. Award to be presented
								
	(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia will recognize the efforts
of hundreds of volunteers who have contributed to the city at a
reception on Thursday, May 21, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Elk’s Lodge,
4747 E. Elk Park Drive off of Highway WW. 
	Mayor Darwin Hindman is scheduled to share greetings with
volunteers and will recognize the city’s Volunteers of the Month for
2008. The event will be emceed by Steve Sapp, Columbia Fire battalion
chief. 
	This year’s reception will also include the presentation of
the first Howard B. Lang Jr. Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service to
the city of Columbia. The award was established with a gift from Leo
Hill, Columbia’s first city manager, who worked under Howard Lang.
Lang served as mayor from 1953 to 1957. The award will be 
presented to Ed Kaiser who has served the city for 40 years in many
capacities including service on the City Council, as a police reserve
officer and in establishing and continuing to volunteer with the Public
Works Household Hazardous Waste Collection. 
	Volunteers serve the city in numerous ways, including
beautifying streets, picking up litter, teaching the public about
recycling, helping at festivals and special events and keeping the
community safe. Volunteers also assist the city in preparing for
disasters, maintaining parks and assisting with children’s activities.

	During the city’s 2008 fiscal year that ended Sept. 30,
volunteers contributed 43,323 hours toward city programs and projects.
The financial benefit of city of Columbia volunteers is estimated at
$845,231.73, based on a national value of $19.55 per hour.
