Potential exists for flooding; residents reminded of flood dangers
COLUMBIA, MO (May 26, 2009) - The Columbia/Boone County Office of
Emergency Management (OEM) is watching this week’s rainfall potential,
and reminding residents to be on the watch in areas prone to minor
flooding. Low-water crossings are the most likely to be at risk for
flooding difficulties.
“While a significant flooding event is not expected this week, there
is still a chance that this week’s rain will cause some low-water
crossings to be covered,” said Interim OEM Director Zim Schwatrze.
“Because of that possibility, we are asking motorists to be
cautious if their route includes a low-water crossing. If water covers
the road, we recommend drivers find a different path to travel.”
A mere six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult.
It takes only two feet of rushing water to carry away most vehicles.
This includes pickups and SUVs. OEM maintains an updated list of road
closures on its Web site at www.showmeboone.com/OEM/closures.htm.
TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN
● NEVER drive into water covering the road. There is no way of
knowing how deep the water is, or if the road is washed out beneath the
water.
● Be especially cautious at night when it's harder to recognize
flood dangers.
● Look out for flooding at highway dips, bridges, and low areas.
● If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher
ground.
● Watch your speed on rain-soaked streets and highways, to prevent
your vehicle from hydroplaning.
