Some cell phone owners cautioned about calling 911; Samsung issues
voluntary Jitterbug recall
COLUMBIA, MO (May 28, 2009) - The Samsung Corporation has announced a
voluntary recall of its “Jitterbug” cellular phones, due to a
possible problem with connections to emergency services. The Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported that roughly 160,000
Jitterbug phones that are in a no-service area could fail to connect to
emergency 911 services. The recall involves Jitterbug cell phones with
model numbers SPH-a110 and SPH-a120, which were sold from March 2008
through May 2009.
“While we haven’t had any reports of potential problems here in
Columbia and Boone County, we want those cell phone owners who might be
affected to be aware of the recall,” says Interim Emergency Management
Director Zim Schwartze. “If you own one of the affected cell phones,
we encourage you to contact the company to get the problem corrected.”
Samsung and Jitterbug are directly contacting consumers to schedule a
free software upgrade. The CPSC says consumers should call Samsung at
(866) 304-4980, if they have not already been contacted.
