National Preparedness Month wraps up; residents encouraged to be
prepared all year long
COLUMBIA, MO (October 5, 2009) - As the sixth annual observance of
“National Preparedness Month” comes to an end, the Columbia/Boone
County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) encourages residents to
continue their efforts to be ready in the event of a disaster.
“We are reminding everyone to be ready for possible disasters all
year round, not just in the month of September,” says interim OEM
Director Zim Schwartze. “Any kind of disaster can strike at any time
of the year, so it’s imperative that we each have a plan for what to
do before, during and after a disaster event. We may not be able to
predict a disaster, but we can be prepared.”
National Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort designed to increase
awareness as well as encourage individuals, families, businesses,
schools and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies.
The Office of Emergency Management, Columbia Fire and Police
departments, and the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health
and Human Services have several publications available for residents,
focusing on preparedness. For more information on being prepared,
contact the Office of Emergency Management at 874-7400, Columbia Police
at 874-7652, Columbia Fire at 874-7391 or the Health Department at
874-7355.
