National Preparedness Month continues: Boone County residents
encouraged to have a plan!
COLUMBIA, MO (September 14, 2009) - Predicting when or where a disaster
will strike is nearly impossible. Because of that, preparing for a
disaster is critical. No matter the disaster, the Columbia/Boone County
Office of Emergency Management (OEM) encourages residents to take steps
to make sure their family is prepared and protected.
“While in many cases we cannot predict or prevent a disaster, we can
be proactive and prepare ourselves,” says interim OEM Director Zim
Schwartze. “Being prepared for the hours and days after a disaster are
important. Having a plan, assembling an emergency supply kit and knowing
where to meet your family members are all steps that can be taken in
advance, to ensure your safety after a disaster.”
The Office of Emergency Management continues its observance of the
sixth annual National Preparedness Month during September. National
Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort designed to increase awareness
as well as encourage individuals, families, businesses, schools and
communities to take action and prepare for emergencies.
The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management has a number
of publications available addressing disaster preparation. Copies of
such materials are available by contacting OEM at (573) 874-7400, or by
logging on the OEM Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com/EM.
