Anything Can Happen!
National Preparedness Month continues

COLUMBIA, MO (September 21, 2009) - As National Preparedness Month
continues, the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management
(OEM) encourages residents to make sure they are prepared for disaster
in any form.

“When we think of the disasters we may face here in Columbia and
Boone County, most of us likely think of fire, flood, tornadoes, snow or
ice,” says Interim OEM Director Zim Schwartze. “However, not all
disasters will fall under the categories of fire or weather. Trucks
carrying hazardous materials travel along Interstate 70 and Highway 63
every day, and there’s always a risk of a traffic accident involving
those trucks. In addition, the nearby Callaway Nuclear Power Plant could
also pose some potential problems, should an accident occur. In light of
that, it’s critical that everyone knows what to do, in each possible
situation.”

The Office of Emergency Management encourages residents to understand
the various potential disasters, and how they can prepare themselves.
OEM has a number of publications available addressing disaster
preparation, including “Are Your Ready? A Citizen’s Guide to Citizen
Preparedness”, which covers nearly every type of catastrophe. Copies
of the guide, and other disaster preparedness materials are available by
contacting OEM at (573) 874-7400 or by logging on the OEM Web site at
www.GoColumbiaMo.com/EM.
