Columbia’s Kiwanis Clubs to work with Columbia Parks & Recreation to
spruce up KiwanisParkthrough a special day of service
April 10 recognized as Kiwanis One Day–a global action day benefiting
children and communities
Columbia’s five Kiwanis Clubs and the Kiwanis family are bringing the
spirit of service alive in Columbiathrough a work day at KiwanisParkon
Saturday, April 10. The project, which will include repainting the C.K.
Odor Shelter and doing a general park cleanup, will start at 10 a.m.at
the facility park entry at 926 College Park Drive. The Columbia Parks &
Recreation Department is supported the Kiwanis One Day project by
providing paint and tools and preparing the shelter for painting.
KiwanisParkwas formed in 1957 from excess property made available when
RussellBoulevardElementary Schoolwas built. Kiwanians encouraged the
City of Columbiato purchase the property for a park and members
contributed by constructing the two shelters at the park.
Kiwanis One Day is a global volunteer action day uniting the entire
Kiwanis family. On this day, more than 75 volunteers in Columbiaare
expected to join nearly 600,000 volunteers around the world in devoting
a few hours to hands-on volunteer service. Kiwanis expects that Kiwanis
One Day will contribute nearly one million service hours around the
world in just one day.
There are five Kiwanis Clubs in Columbiawith more than 250 members.
Each year, these clubs support human service organizations both in
Columbiaand around the world by contributing more than $50,000 in
addition to volunteer time. Kiwanians raise funds locally through
Pancake Day, concessions at MU athletic events and other activities.
Kiwanis Clubs support several Columbiaorganizations including the
CommunityNursery School, the Central Missouri Food Bank,
NoraStewartNursery School, and the Children’s Hospital at the University
of Missouri Hospital.
The Kiwanis family also includes service organizations for all ages in
the Columbiacommunity: Aktion Club for adults with disabilities, MU
CircleK, Key Clubs at RockBridgeand HickmanHigh Schools, Builders Clubs
in Junior Highs and Middle Schools and K-Kids Clubs in Elementary
Schools.
