Volunteers ‘Cleanup Columbia’ despite rainy weather
COLUMBIA, MO (April 24, 2010) - A rainy day did not deter volunteers
who participated in today’s Cleanup Columbia, a citywide trash pick-up
event. The city of Columbia Volunteer Programs estimates that 1,535
volunteers participated today picking up 1,994 bags of litter and
logging 3,066 hours of service. These numbers are based on reports from
75 groups that provided data on their cleanups. More than 560 volunteers
attended the post-cleanup luncheon at Twin Lakes. This was the 14th
annual event.
“A few groups chose to postpone their cleanup, but the majority of
volunteers got out this morning and worked through the sprinkles and
threat of rain,” said Leigh Britt, manager of the city’s Office of
Neighborhood Services. “The participation shows the pride our residents
have in their community and their dedication to service.”
Cleanup Columbia is a citywide trash pick-up event organized by the
city of Columbia’s Volunteer Programs. During Cleanup Columbia,
volunteers pick up litter along streets, in parks and along streams and
trails and remove graffiti from public property in central Columbia.
Cleanup Columbia is sponsored by APAC-Missouri Division, the Sierra
Club, CenturyLink, the Columbia Daily Tribune, 102.3 BXR, the
Mid-Missouri CW and KOMU TV 8. Columbia Public Works, Firestone Tires
and the Golden K Kiwanis Club provide special assistance for the event.
Additional updates on the work accomplished by Cleanup Columbia
volunteers will be posted at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
