COLUMBIA, MO (April 30, 2010) - Columbia Water & Light is upgrading the
water distribution system on the east side of town. The 2008 Long Range
Water Study indicates that a new 24-inch water main should be added to
the distribution system. The new water main will move large volumes of
water to storage sites and a pump station. A consulting firm is helping
the city establish routes for the new water main.
The new water line will tie into an existing water main near the
intersection of Ponderosa Street and Nifong Boulevard. From there the
line needs to go to the Shepard Water Tower, located at the end of
Stadium and Highway 63. This section is referred to as the south
section. The north section will run from the Shepard water tower to the
Hillsdale Pumping Station on the Interstate 70 Drive South East.
Engineering Surveys and Services evaluated 26 different routes for the
new water transmission line. The criteria used to narrow the options
down to six alternatives was: construction cost,
maintenance/accessibility, environmental impacts, existing and proposed
improvements, planned corridor development, easements, avoiding park
land, tree clearing and hazardous materials.
The city of Columbia would like to give people interested in the
project an opportunity to review the different paths being proposed for
the new water main. There are three routes for the south section and
three routes for the north section. After reviewing input from the
public, Columbia Water & Light will present the preferred alignments to
the Columbia City Council. There will be a public hearing and the City
Council will make the final decision on the new water main route. The
new water main is being funded through a voter approved bond issue
passed in 2008.
