FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City’s Historic Preservation Commission awarded grant for economic
impact study

(COLUMBIA, MO) – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources State
Historic Preservation Office has given preliminary approval to a grant
application submitted by the city’s Historic Preservation Commission for
a study of the “Economic Development Impact of Historic Preservation in
Columbia, MO.” Pending approval of a grant agreement by the City Council
and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the state will fund
$12,000 of the project cost with FY2011 State Historic Preservation Fund
grant monies.
The Historic Preservation Commission anticipates this project will
describe the fiscal impact of historic preservation on the local economy
by analyzing the direct and indirect benefits of historic preservation
on economic development indicators such as jobs, income, property values
and tax revenue. The commission submitted this grant to enhance historic
preservation and economic development in the city by promoting the
benefits of historic preservation to an expanded audience of homeowners,
developers and policy makers.
The target completion date for this project is fall of 2012. For more
information, please contact the Department of Planning and Development
at (573) 874-7239 or by e-mail at planning at GoColumbiaMo.com.
