Complete Count Alliance gets ready for 2010 U.S. Census
COLUMBIA, MO (January 12, 2010) - When: Friday, January 15, starting at
2 p.m.
Where: Activities and Recreation Center (ARC), 1701 W. Ash St.
What: Organizational meeting of Complete Count Alliance, a broad-based
group of citizens charged with encouraging others to complete and return
their 2010 Census forms this spring.
On the agenda…
● Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman
● Ronni Watkins, head of the Missouri Complete Count effort, U.S.
Census Bureau
● Break-out sessions
Background: The 2010 United States Census is coming up. Columbia and
Boone County are mobilizing to assure that the count is fair, accurate
and complete. Alliance members (50 and growing) are credible voices with
strong ties to community networks and groups.
Without a complete count, Mayor Hindman says, we risk under-reporting
our population and losing eligibility for many federal and state grant
opportunities. Businesses might think we’re too small for their
investments, and we could even lose a seat in Congress.
Columbia’s response rate in the 2000 Census was about 70 percent. The
Census Bureau associates low mail response rates mainly with lower
incomes; unemployment; foreign birth and discomfort with English;
renting living quarters; lower education levels; frequent moves; and
distrust of government.
