Boards and commissions applications are available 

COLUMBIA, MO (January 20, 2010) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th floor, by noon on Friday,
Feb. 5. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the
city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The
following are current boards and commissions openings: 

The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to
expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in the
HVACR business and a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is
empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly
meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m. 

The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in absence of the regular member) with terms
expiring Aug. 1, 2010, for the following categories: professional
engineer with experience in electrical/mechanical engineering and a
master plumber. The commission periodically reviews and makes
recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly
meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The Care Advisory Board has one vacancy with the term to expire March
1, 2013. The member must be interested in promoting the C.A.R.E. program
to current and prospective employers in Columbia and Boone County. The
board advises the Council on matters pertaining to the C.A.R.E. program.
Meetings are held on call.

The Columbia Vision Commission has one vacancy for a coordinating
committee member with the term to expire Dec. 15, 2012. The member must
be a resident of Boone County, not residing within the city limits of
Columbia, and must have demonstrated a commitment to the visioning
process. Candidates will be evaluated on the ability to work with data
and understand systematic relationships, the ability to work
collaboratively, management skills, independence, existing memberships
or positions, and contributions to the diversity of the commission. The
commission tracks, monitors and assists with the implementation of the
visioning process. Meetings are held on call. 

The Community Development Commission has one vacancy with the term to
expire Nov. 1, 2012. The member must be a resident of Ward 4 and a
qualified voter of the city of Columbia. Members shall not serve on the
board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for
funding through the commission or which receives funding upon
recommendation of the commission. The commission acts in an advisory
capacity in all matters pertaining to community development. Monthly
meetings are held on call.

The Firefighters Retirement Board has one vacancy with the term to
expire Dec. 31, 2011. The member must be a registered voter and resident
of the city. The board oversees and establishes policies for the fire
retirement trust. Quarterly meetings are held on call. 

The Health Insurance Appeals Board has one vacancy with the term to
expire Feb. 16, 2013. The member must have substantive professional
experience in benefits administration for a large organization. The
board hears appeals from the decisions of the administrator. Monthly
meetings are held on call. 

The Historic Preservation Commission has one vacancy with the term to
expire Sept. 1, 2012. The member must have an interest in historic
preservation and represent disciplines such as architecture, design,
law, real estate appraisal, construction/general contracting or be a
layperson. The commission makes recommendations to the Council regarding
historically significant structures. Monthly meetings are held the first
Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Human Rights Commission has three vacancies with terms to expire
March 1, 2012, and March 1, 2013. Members shall have demonstrated a
strong commitment to human rights and a belief in the principles of
equal opportunity. The commission advises the Council on human rights
issues and reviews and makes decisions regarding complaints of
discrimination filed with the city. Monthly meetings are held the first
Tuesday at 7 p.m. 

The Mayor’s Committee on Physical Fitness has one vacancy to be
appointed by the mayor with the term to expire Nov. 30, 2011. The
committee educates the public about the importance of regular physical
fitness activity and promotes, initiates and encourages local physical
fitness and sports programs in the community. Monthly meetings are held
as needed; quarterly meetings held the first Tuesday of the designated
month at 12:30 p.m.

The New Century Fund Board has one vacancy with the term to expire
Sept. 30, 2010. The member must have an interest in the future of the
city of Columbia and the funding needs required to achieve future
success. Members must be current residents and qualified electors of the
city of Columbia. The New Century Fund Inc. is a Missouri not-for-profit
corporation. Meetings are held on call.

The Public Communications Resource Advisory Committee has one vacancy
with the term to expire Dec. 31, 2010. The member must be a qualified
voter, a resident of Ward 1, must be experienced in the field of
communications, citizenship or management of not-for-profit
organizations, and must not be a paid officer or employee of the City,
nor serve on the board of directors or be employed by any entity that
applies for funding through the committee or which receives funding upon
recommendation of the committee. The committee advises the City Council
in allocating designated revenue to entities that provide public
communication services to Columbia citizens. Monthly meetings are held
the fourth Thursday at 4 p.m. 

The Public Transportation Advisory Commission has seven vacancies with
terms to expire one and two years after appointment. The commission
advises staff with regard to transit policy and safety matters
concerning all forms of transit issues affecting the city, studies
issues arising under the Columbia Transit Master Plan as they relate to
transportation and makes recommendations to the City Council. Meetings
are held on call.

The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has two vacancies with terms to
expire Oct. 31, 2010, and Oct. 31, 2011. One member must be a healthcare
professional, and both shall have demonstrated interest in and concern
for substance and alcohol abuse problems in the community. The
commission promotes coordination of programs intended to prevent and
eliminate alcohol and substance abuse. Monthly meetings are held the
second Wednesday at 12 p.m. 

The Sustainable Farms and Communities Board has two vacancies with
terms to expire Dec. 31, 2011. The member must be a resident of the
city. Members are responsible for overseeing the future construction,
maintenance and operations of a farmers market community center. The
Sustainable Farms and Communities Inc. is a Missouri not-for-profit
corporation. Meetings are held on call.
