Speed limits changing on residential streets
(COLUMBIA, MO) – The Public Works Department is in the process of
changing the speed limit signs on streets throughout Columbia. This
stems from the City Council approval in fall 2009 to amend Chapter
14-233 of the Code of Ordinances.
After hearing a report (Investigation of Residential Street Speed Limit
Reduction) conducted by the University of Missouri, the City Council
approved lowering speed limits from 30 mph to 25 mph on residential
streets. The study found the 25 mph speed limit was effective at
lowering speeds on residential roads. Streets that will be affected are
defined as residential streets with traffic volumes less than 2,000 cars
per day. Some major roadways will also see speed limit changes as well.
One example is Conley Road, which will increase to 35 mph, previously
posted as 30 mph. This ordinance change allows for consistent
methodology for setting speed limits on all city streets.
City crews are now replacing the speed limit signs. All speed limit
adjustments will be in place by Oct. 1. The Columbia Police Department
will enforce the speed limit that is posted on the street. Citizens are
reminded to play close attention to the speed limits throughout Columbia
as these changes are implemented.
The total cost to replace speed limit signs will be $128,000 which is
being funded with traffic safety funds.
