'Earth Hour' Reminder
COLUMBIA, MO (March 23, 2010) -
When: Saturday, March 27, from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Where: In Columbia and across the globe
What: Citizens are encouraged to turn off lights and non-essential
electricity in homes and buildings to take part in a symbolic “wave of
darkness.”
Background
Last year, Columbia Water and Light customers who participated in
“Earth Hour” reduced the community’s electric load by an estimated
1.27 megawatts (equivalent of power used in 50 homes on an average day
in Columbia). The estimated reduction for the 2008 Earth Hour was 1.72
megawatts (equivalent of 70 homes).
This year’s Earth Hour is the third such annual, international,
voluntary darkening. Citizens are invited to turn off artificial
lighting during that period, reducing the need for electric power
generation and its associated greenhouse gas emissions.
