Earth Hour lowers electric load

(Columbia, MO) – Columbia residents were encouraged to turn off lights
last Saturday night during the annual Earth Hour event. Columbia Water &
Light estimates that the electric load from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March
27 resulted in a 1.58 megawatt drop in the electric load in Columbia.

Seven weeks of electric data was evaluated and the electric consumption
for Earth Hour was compared to other days that had similar electric
loads and temperatures. The 1.58 megawatts of electricity is equivalent
to the amount of power used by 62 homes in Columbia for one average day.
In 2009, Columbia’s electric load dropped 1.27 megawatts during Earth
Hour and in 2008 there were 1.72 megawatts shed.

Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman issued a proclamation that encouraged
citizens to voluntarily turn off lights during Earth Hour. The global
event is held each year to raise awareness about saving energy and
avoiding greenhouse gas emissions.
