Unite 4 Healthy Neighborhoods Action Meeting: From Planning to
Implementation
(COLUMBIA, MO) – The Healthy Community Partnership (HCP)
will host a follow-up meeting to the Unite 4 Healthy Neighborhoods
(U4HN) community gathering, held in April. The action meeting will be
Thursday, May 27 from 5-7 p.m. at the Columbia/Boone County Department
of Public Health and Human Services.
The U4HN gathering was designed to bring together
neighborhood residents of all ages and local leaders to discuss emerging
health and public policy issues facing the Columbia population and
explore solutions to creating more/better physical activity and
nutrition opportunities for children living in underserved areas of
Columbia.
Community members who attended U4HN identified six
initiatives to address through continued work:
· Community Food System Mapping
· Home and Community Food Production
· Affordable and Accessible Farmers' Market Produce
· Neighborhood Association Revitalization
· Public Transportation Expansion
· Youth Advocacy Council
Thursday's meeting will focus on developing action teams
around the six identified issues and beginning development of plans to
address the various issues.
Prior to meeting at 5 p.m. at the Health Department, HCP
members will walk with pre-school children from the Nora Stewart Early
Learning Center at 505 East Ash Street to Kilgore's Medical Pharmacy at
700 North Providence Road. The walk will start at 3:00 p.m. and the
children will participate in a short health education program and will
assist with planting Kilgore's community garden. This joint project is
a great example of privately-owned businesses joining forces with
schools, non-profits, government and others to provide nutrition and
physical activity opportunities for underserved populations.
The Healthy Community Partnership sponsored by the PedNet
Coalition and the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and
Human Services consists of approximately 70 agencies including
government, education, business, non-profit and community-based, working
to promote health throughout the community.
