City Will Hold Bow Hunter Orientation, Registration Sessions
COLUMBIA, MO (August 4, 2011) - The City of Columbia will conduct three hunter orientation and registration sessions for citizens interested in bow hunting deer on designated city properties as part of the city's deer management program. The sessions are open to the public at no charge. The one-hour sessions will be held at the ARC (Activity & RecreationCenter) at 1701 W. Ash. The following sessions are the only times when city hunting permits will be issued.
*Saturday, August 27, 8:30 a.m.
*Wednesday, August 31, 3 p.m.
*Wednesday, August 31, 6 p.m.
Anyone wishing to receive a permit should register online at http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/ParksandRec and must attend one of the orientation sessions. Individuals who are pre-registered will be able to obtain their permit upon completion of the orientation session. Those hunters who attended the 2010 orientation and received a two-year permit do not have to attend the 2011 orientation, provided they still have copies of the two-year permit.
Bow hunting will be permitted during two seasons: September 15 through November 11 and November 23 through Jan. 15, 2012. Hunting with a city permit will be allowed at the following locations:
*Norma Sutherland Smith Park, Brown Station Road
*Grindstone Nature Area, 2011 Old 63 S.
*Strawn Road property, 801 N. Strawn Road
*SC Fields Sewer Utility, Coats Lane, South of Gillespie Bridge Road
*Sanitary Landfill, access from Hinkson Creek Road and Wyatt Lane
*MKT Nature Area, Scott Boulevard access and MKT Jay Dix Station access
*Gans Creek Recreation Area, Gans Road
*Oakland Church Road property
To hunt at the designated locations, hunters must attend one of the three orientation sessions and obtain a permit that they must carry while hunting on city property and accompanying permit that must be displayed in vehicles using designated parking areas. Hunters shall also follow all relevant Missouri Department of Conservation rules, regulations, and requirements related to hunting.
Since it began in 2004, the deer management program has averaged more than 250 hunters per year. Further details about the program are posted on the City's Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com/ParksandRec.
