Earthquakes Serve As a Reminder to be Prepared
COLUMBIA, MO (August 23, 2011) - The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) encourages residents to use Tuesday's earthquakes in the eastern and western U.S. as a reminder to be prepared for the possibility of an earthquake striking the Midwest.
"While we're grateful that there hasn't been widespread damage or injuries reported, we should use the quakes as a call to be ready," says OEM Director Zim Schwartze. "With the possibility of an earthquake along the New Madrid Fault over us, we encourage residents, businesses, schools and other local entities to learn what should be done before, during and after such a disaster. We hope it doesn't happen here, but it is always best to be prepared for the possibility that it will."
The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management has a number of publications available, including those that address earthquakes. Links to that information can be found online at www.gocolumbiamo.com/EM.
