National Preparedness Month 2011
COLUMBIA, MO (August 30, 2011) - Disaster can strike at any time and come in any form. Whether it's a natural, technological or man-made disaster, the key to recovery is being prepared before disaster strikes. September is "National Preparedness Month", a nationwide effort designed to increase awareness as well as encourage individuals, families, businesses, churches, schools and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies.
"No matter the source of the disaster, or the scale, preparedness well in advance of a disaster is vital in the aftermath," says Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Director Zim Schwartze. "It may be a house fire, a tornado, a blizzard or terrorist attack. Having a plan on every level increases your chances of survival during and after an incident. We encourage residents to take steps now before a disaster hits. Have a smoke detector in your home, put together an emergency supply kit, make a plan for your family and keep updated on threatening weather. Those are just a few of the ways to make sure you're prepared for disaster."
Schwartze reminds everyone while Preparedness Month is in September, being prepared for disaster is a year-round effort. Prevention and prediction of disasters may be nearly impossible, but preparation and reaction to an event can temper its impact.
The Office of Emergency Management has a number of publications available for persons interested in learning more about disaster preparedness. For more information, contact OEM at #573-874-7400 or log on to the OEM website at www.gocolumbiamo.com/EM.
