Wishes For a Safe and Happy Holiday From the Office of Emergency Management and Public Safety Joint Communications

COLUMBIA, MO (December 24, 2011) - As Christmas comes this weekend, the staff and management from the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and Public Safety Joint Communications (PSJC) would like to take time to wish everyone A happy and safe holiday season.  We would also like to remember those whose duty calls for them to be away from their families this time of year.

"We express gratitude to those who work to keep everyone safe as they celebrate the holidays," says OEM and PSJC Director Zim Schwartze.  "We thank our emergency telecommunicators, police, fire, EMS personnel and most importantly the members of our military, who are in our thoughts this holiday season."

Schwartze reminds anyone taking a trip for the holiday to make sure your vehicle is ready by checking fuel, battery, lights, tires, heater, brakes, wipers, defroster, and oil.  Drivers should also pack winter storm kits that includes a flashlight, windshield scraper, clothes, matches or candles, booster cables, sand, chains, blankets, and non-perishable food.   Most importantly, if wintry weather surpasses your driving ability, do not venture onto the road.

Those staying at home for the holidays are reminded to double-check battery powered equipment in case electric service is interrupted, keep an ample supply of non-perishable food and water as well as a dependable heating source, and don't forget to also make sure pets and animals have shelter and an adequate water supply.

Whether at home or on the road, Schwartze encourages everyone to stay updated on the weather with local media and NOAA Weather Radio. Most importantly, in the event of a life-threatening emergency, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 for assistance.
