Northwest Columbia Duplex Damaged by Fire

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 3:07 P.M. on Sunday, February 20, 2011 to 2600 Sunflower Street for a report of a structure fire.

On arrival, crews found the duplex filled with smoke.  Upon entering the home, crews found a fire in an upstairs bedroom, which was brought under control within 20 minutes.  The home suffered significant fire damage to the bedroom, with smoke, heat, and water damage throughout the remainder of the home.  There were no injuries and damage is currently estimated at $25,000 to the rental property owned by Vicky Miserez.

The occupants of the home, Reginald and Chastity Jeff, indicated to fire crews that Mrs. Jeff was home with the couples two small children (20 months, 8 years) while Mr. Jeff was not home.  Their eight-year-old child discovered the fire, reported it to Mrs. Jeff, who immediately evacuated the home and called 9-1-1 for fire department assistance.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department worked at the scene and have determined the fire was caused by a child playing with matches inside the closet of the upstairs bedroom.

The Jeff family is receiving emergency assistance from the Columbia-Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross as a result of this fire.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to always keep lighters, matches, and other dangerous items stored securely, out of the reach of children.
