Disturbance Leads to Structure Fire
COLUMBIA, MO (June 20, 2011) - At 10:17 am on Monday, Junbe 20, 2011 the Columbia Police Department notified the Columbia Fire Department of a structure fire at 1206 Park DeVille, Park DeVille Condominiums.
Columbia Police advised responding fire units that a domestic disturbance with a subject who claimed he was armed had occurred earlier and now the subject had set the condominium on fire and smoke and flames were coming from the unit.
While en-route fire units were told by Columbia Police that all occupants, including the subject involved in the disturbance were out of the unit.
Fire units arrived on scene and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the east side of the 1200 building which contains eight (8) condominiums. Columbia Police advised fire units that they have evacuated all residents within the area of the fire.
Fire fighters entered the condo unit, 1206, and located the fire in two bedrooms and the connecting hallway. Fire fighters were able to bring the fire under control in under 15 minutes.
There is considerable fire damage to 50% of unit 1206, and smoke and minor water damage to the unit directly below 1206. Unit 1208 suffered light smoke damage.
All residents, except in unit 1206, were able to return to their condo units before noon.
Fire investigators are working with Columbia Police investigators to determine the origin or origins of the fire and the method used to start the fire.
As of this release, investigators were still on the scene working.
During fire fighting operations, a Columbia Fire Fighter suffered from a heat related illness and was transported as a precaution to a local hospital. He was later released and has since returned to his assigned duties.
