Columbia Boone County Office of Emergency Management Prepares for Potential Flooding
COLUMBIA, MO (June 27, 2011) - Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management Prepared for Potential Flooding
As information continues to develop regarding river levels and precipitation forecasts upstream from Boone County, the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management along with all the emergency service organizations and local governments within the county continue to monitor the hydrologic river levels and forecasts and meet on a regular basis.
The record release of water upstream as well as heavy rains in the river basin over the past 24 hours will eventually cause an impact here in Boone County along the Missouri River. At this point there has been an inventory of supplies from across the county and some supplies have been pre-positioned along the river. Today, Boone County Public Works Department accepted a delivery of 100,000 sandbags to their storage facility.
With a projected crest of 28-29 feet measured at the Boonville Gauge by June 29th, minor flooding is expected to occur in the McBaine area over the next 24 to 48 hours as the levee height at McBaine is 25 feet.
At Rocheport, city officials and the Boone County Fire Protection District continue to monitor the situation. 1,700 feet of concrete barriers and plastic were positioned over the weekend. Officials will continue to watch river forecasts and precipitation to determine if sandbagging will be necessary.
The Columbia Water Treatment Plant is protected at the projected crests; however significant water over Route K could affect normal traffic in and out of the plant. Two months of supplies have been stock piled at the plant and MoDOT has granted approval to the city to raise the roadbed level if needed.
The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management encourages our citizens to monitor the situation closely and be prepared in the event the potential flood waters threaten your area. This could include evacuations. Remember that being prepared is the best step in dealing with an emergency. You can find preparation tips at http://www.ready.gov/america/beinformed/floods.html.
