Fireworks
COLUMBIA, MO (June 28, 2011) - Fireworks
In 2009, the latest year reliable statistics are available, 18,000 fireworks-related fires were reported the in U.S. which caused an estimated 38 billion dollars in property damage.
In 2009, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 8,800 people for fireworks related injuries; 53% of 2009 emergency room fireworks-related injuries were to the extremities and 42% were to the head.
The July 4th Holiday should be remembered as a fun and enjoyable time when we reflect on the liberties we have, remember those who have and are serving our country, and to enjoy time with family and friends perhaps over barbequed hamburgers and hotdogs.
A tragic incident with fire works can literally scar those memories.
So, this 4th of July Columbia Fire Fighters and Columbia Police remind our citizens that discharging of fireworks within the city limits is prohibited by ordinance. Leave fireworks to the professionals and attend the professional display at Memorial Stadium on the UMC Campus or a professional display in your local area. Again this year, a professional display and other entertainment will be provided at the annual "Fire in the Sky". As a reminder, DO NOT bring fireworks to this display.
The Columbia Police Department will have extra patrol officers on duty for fireworks enforcement from Friday, July 1, 2011 until Tuesday, July 5, 2011. If you have a fireworks complaint, please do not call 9-1-1 but instead contact the Joint Communication non-emergency phone number at (573)442-6131. The Columbia Police Department wishes everyone a safe and fun 4th of July weekend.
