COLUMBIA, MO (March 11, 2011) - Saturday Science: students build transformers

Time:   Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 8:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

Place:  Water and Light Casteel Building, 1518 Business Loop 70 East, Suite A

(Across the street from the Power Plant)

(Columbia, MO) Electricity is part of our every day lives but how it gets from a power plant to our homes is something not everyone understands. This Saturday, Junior High students will get a chance to learn how energy is converted to lower voltages by building their own transformers. This hands-on project was designed by Columbia Water & Light staff for the Saturday Science program. The goal of the project is for the students to apply science principles to something they deal with in daily life.

Saturday Science was started by theColumbiaPublic Schools and the University of Missouri along with local businesses to encourage students' interest in science.  Students apply for the program through their junior high school then spend several Saturdays traveling to different locations to learn how science is used in various occupations.
