Columbia Public School students to participate in cherry grove rededication and tree planting ceremony

COLUMBIA, MO (May 13, 2011) -

When:

Monday, May 16, 4-5 p.m.

Where:

Cherry Grove at Cosmopolitan Recreation Area, 1615 Business Loop 70 West. The cherry grove is near Football Field #4 - go through the roundabout to the north road. Park in the first parking lot on the right. Someone will be giving directions to the ceremony.

What:

Columbia Public School students who participated in the 2008 Sister City student exchange with Hakusan, Japan, will join Mayor Bob McDavid in a rededication of the cherry grove and cherry tree planting ceremony in remembrance of The Honorable Mitsuo Kado, former mayor - Hakusan, Japan.

Mayor Kado served Hakusan (formerly Matto City) from Nov. 30, 1998, until his death Oct. 24, 2010. Mayor Kado was a great supporter of the Columbia - Hakusan sister city relationship, which dates back to March 7, 1988. He welcomed many Columbia exchange students during his tenure as mayor.

Notes:

In a letter of condolence dated Nov. 4, 2010, Mayor McDavid made the following statement:

"The cherry blossom has served as a symbol of friendship between Japan and the United States since 1912, when the mayor of Tokyo donated 3,000 trees to Washington, D.C. In the spring of 1995, the City of Matto generously arranged to have cherry blossom trees planted in Columbia's Cosmopolitan Park. The cherry grove still stands as a testament to our enduring friendship. In spring 2011, Columbia Parks and Recreation will plant new cherry blossom trees in the park."
