Boards and commissions applications are available
COLUMBIA, MO (May 18, 2011) - TheColumbiacity clerk is accepting applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received by the clerk's office, 701 E. Broadway, 2nd floor, bynoonon Friday, June 3. Applications are available at the clerk's office or on the city's website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings:
*The Board of Mechanical Examiners has two vacancies with terms to expire June 17, 2014. One member must be a general contractor not in the HVACR business and one must be a HVACR journeyman mechanic. Both must be residents of the city of Columbia. The board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.
*The Building Construction Codes Commission has four vacancies with terms to expire Aug. 1, 2011, Aug. 1, 2012, and Aug. 1, 2013. One alternate is needed from each of the following categories: professional engineer (experience in electrical/mechanical), master plumber, fire expert and electrician. The commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
*The Columbia Library District Board has three vacancies to be appointed by the mayor with terms to expire June 30, 2014. The members must reside within the Columbia Library District and shall hold no other office or position in city government. Duties include appointing the librarian and overseeing expenditures of library fund monies. Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday after the second Tuesday.
*The Columbia Vision Commission has two vacancies for the coordinating committee with terms to expire Dec. 15, 2011, and Dec. 15, 2012. The member must have demonstrated a commitment to the visioning process. Candidates will be evaluated on the ability to work with data and understand systematic relationships, the ability to work collaboratively, management skills, independence, existing memberships or positions and contributions to the diversity of the commission. The commission tracks, monitors and assists with the implementation of the visioning process. Meetings are held the last Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
*The Comprehensive Plan Task Force has two vacancies. Consideration will be given to prior involvement in the visioning process, service on a city commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business or professional organization. The task force advises and assists the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council on all phases of the comprehensive plan development, including citizen involvement, public education and outreach, recruitment of volunteers and review of interim products. Meetings are held the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
*The Cultural Affairs Standing Committee on Public Art has one vacancy with the term to expire July 1, 2014. The member must be a member of the business community. The committee makes recommendations to the Council regarding the city's Percent for Art Program. Meetings are held on call.
*The Health Insurance Appeals Board has one vacancy with the term to expire Feb. 16, 2014. The member must have substantive professional experience in benefits administration for a large organization. The board hears appeals from the decisions of the administrator. Monthly meetings are held on call.
*The Historic Preservation Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Sept. 1, 2012. The member must have an interest in historic preservation and represent disciplines such as architecture, design, law, real estate appraisal, construction/general contracting or be a layperson active in historic preservation. The commission makes recommendations to the Council regarding historically significant structures. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday at 7 p.m.
*The Storm Water Advisory Commission has two vacancies with terms to expire June 30, 2013. Members must be qualified voters and residents of the city at least one year prior to appointment, and be sympathetic with the principle of municipal storm water management that ensures sound and efficient management of the system. The commission advises staff with regard to policy and long-range goals in all matters concerning the storm water utility. Meetings are held on call.
*The Water & Light Advisory Board has two vacancies with terms to expire June 30, 2015. Members must be sympathetic with the principal of municipal operation of the water and light system and be qualified voters and residents of the city for at least one year prior to appointment. The board advises the Council on the operations and needs of the city's water and light system. Monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday at 8 a.m.
