Afternoon Fire at Weil Tire Injures One

COLUMBIA, MO (May 24, 2011) - At 4:58 PM on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to Weil Tire and Auto at 1501 Old Highway 63 South to a report of a fire.

Fire units arrived on the scene and noted heavy smoke and fire coming from two automotive bay doors on the north side of the building. Fire fighters also located a male employee of the business who had suffered burn injuries outside of the building.

While Columbia Fire Department Paramedics treated the patient, other fire fighters began attacking the fire. The fire was brought under control in about 20 mintes.

The employee who was injured was treated on the scene by fire department personel and Paramedics from University of Missouri Hospitals. He was then transported to the University of Missouri Hospitals Level One Trauma Center and then transfered to the George Peak Burn Center at University Hospitals. The employee suffered burn injuries over most of his body.

Fire Investigators are working to determine the origin and cause of the fire and it is still under investigation this evening. An official damage estimate is not available as of this release. Fire personnel cleared the scene shortly after 7 PM.
