Columbia Fire Stations Not Proper Shelter From the Storm

COLUMBIA, MO (May 25, 2011) - After the recent storms, both the Columbia Fire Department and Office of Emergency Management have been inundated with calls asking for safe spots to shelter. While each person and family should develop a plan and identify safe areas to shelter in storms - Fire Stations are not appropriate shelters.

Fire stations may not be accessible as fire fighters are often out of the station on calls during severe weather. When fire fighters are on calls and out of the stations, the stations are locked and citizens arriving to seek shelter will be caught out in the open.

Everyone should develop a plan and identify safe areas to shelter. The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management has tremendously valuable planning tools available on line at www.GoColumbiaMo.com/EM/index.php . You can also find planning tools at the Federal Emergency Management web site at http://www.fema.gov/hazard/tornado/index.shtm .

Again, Columbia Fire Stations should not be considered as places to shelter during severe storms.
