Matthes Commits to Citizen-Centered Government
COLUMBIA, MO (May 27, 2011) - Citizens will be at the center of their local government, City Manager Mike Matthes said today in his first State-of-the-City message to Mayor Bob McDavid and Council members. This means "...serving them as if we could lose their business and loyalty."
Columbia's Charter requires the City Manager to submit an annual statement of policy recommendations for programs and priorities. Matthes said that, because of his brief tenure in Columbia, his message would offer a fresh assessment of the community and emphasize two core principles: service and performance. "The FY 2012 budget I will propose to you at the end of July will clearly recommend programs and priorities based on these two principles," he said.
Matthes sees a community with vision, ideas and a sound, stable City government that is weathering the general economic slowdown. That's a good foundation for growing Columbia's economy and investing in public assets like roads, historically a high citizen priority.
The full text of the message is at www.GoColumbiaMo.com . Matthes is available for interviews between 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. today.
