Columbia celebrates America Recycles Day
COLUMBIA, MO (November 7, 2011) - Since 1997, communities across the country have come together in November to celebrate America Recycles Day. America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in theUnited States. It is a day to inform and educate -- to get neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when everyone works together in making recycling better 365 days a year. The public is invited to visit the City ofColumbia's recycling booth at the Daniel Boone Regional Library, 100 W. Broadway, on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 1-5 p.m. for information on how to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
America Recycles Day kicks off the annual "Use Less Stuff" holiday campaign. During the five weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's, it is estimated that the nation's trash increases by an extra one million tons per week. The purpose of the campaign is to point out the necessity of creating less waste in the first place, and to show how easily and profitably source reduction can be made a part of our lives.
For tips on avoiding waste this holiday season, citizens may stop by the booth Nov. 13, check out the city's website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com (search: GoUseLessStuff), call the Solid Waste Division at (573) 874-6271 or visit www.AmericaRecyclesDay.org.
